OVER 100 PASTRY PROFESSIONALS ENTER THE WORKFORCE

Chicago, Illinois (December 22, 2011)—The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King College of City Colleges of Chicago celebrated the graduation of 105 students of their full-time programs, L’Art de la Pâtisserie and L’Art du Gâteau, on Friday, December 16, 2011 at the historic Union League Club of Chicago. During the ceremony hosted by the co-founders of The French Pastry School, Chefs Jacquy Pfeiffer and Sébastien Canonne, M.O.F., students received their well-earned certificates after four or six months of hands-on training in the baking and pastry arts. The students were joined by their guests, including family, friends, sponsors of The French Pastry School and their commencement speakers, French Consul General, Graham Paul, and food-writing icon, Barbara Fairchild.

Pierre Zimmermann, World Baking Champion

Chicago, Illinois (October 12, 2011) - Chef Pierre Zimmermann, World Baking Champion and Chef Instructor at The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King College, was named one of 2011’s Top Ten Bakers in the October issue of Dessert Professional Magazine. Chef Pierre Zimmermann joined the school last year as a full-time Chef Instructor in the new Artisanal Baking Course, L’Art de la Boulangerie, which offers hands-on training to students who wish to enter the time-honored profession.

Chef Jacquy Pfeiffer Exhibits in London Museum

The Victoria & Albert Museum in London, England welcomes Chef Jacquy Pfeiffer where he will showcase sugar techniques, with a sugar sculpture on display as a part of the “Power of Making” exhibition in the museum. Two artists create similar pieces in different mediums, Chef Jacquy is paired with a glass blower. Future Students of The French Pastry School Receive Les Dames D’Escoffier Scholarships

Alice Park, who is enrolled in the inaugural session of the eight-week course, L’Art de la Boulangerie, beginning May 31st, is one of the 2011 recipients of a scholarship from Les Dames d’Escoffier. A career changer, formerly a paralegal, Alice is relocating to Chicago from California. Also awarded a scholarhip for the upcoming July session of the 24-week program, L’Art de la Pâtisserie, is Erin Winston. Erin is making the move from the front of the house to the pastry kitchen where she looks forward to exploring her passion. Congratulations, Alice and Erin! Les Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI) is a worldwide society of women dedicated to creating a culture in the community that fosters excellence and promotes the achievement of women in culinary professions through educational and charitable activities. Takashi restaurant organized a grand dinner benefitting Japan disaster relief with the help of many of Chicago’s most talented chefs. French Government Recognizes Pierre Zimmermann
Pierre Zimmermann, one of the instructors in L’Art de la Boulangerie, recently added another accolade under his toque: the Médaille d’Argent de l’Enseignement Technique (Silver Medal for Technical Teaching), an honor bestowed by the French Ministry of Education. Chef Zimmermann is particularly proud of this achievement, one that recognizes his efforts as an instructor and a mentor. “My role as a teacher has always been very important to me,” said Zimmermann. “This distinction is a great honor, and I look forward to continuing to pass on this wonderful tradition to future bakers, especially in my new position at The French Pastry School.” Read more…

Foodservice Educators Network International's 13th Annual FENI Summit in the Windy City of Cuisine

Chicago, Illinois (February 23, 2011) – Chef educators of the culinary and pastry arts traveled from around the country to meet in Chicago this past weekend, participating in the 13th Annual Foodservice Educators Network International (FENI) Summit. Teachers of all things sweet and savory took part in master classes at several venues including The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King College at City Colleges of Chicago. Produced by Chef Educator Today Magazine and Talcott Publishing, the event drew hundreds of attendees with nearly 200 present for master demonstrations at The French Pastry School.

The French Pastry School’s Scholarship Foundation Gala Exceeds Goals and Expectations!

Chicago, Illinois (February 11, 2011) - The magnificent halls of The Merchandise Mart were hardly recognizable on February 5, 2011 when it was transformed into an elegant carnival filled to the brim with savory treats, sweet morsels and unique entertainment. The 6th annual For the Love of Chocolate Gala welcomed over 900 guests and raised over $70,000 in scholarships to benefit the students of The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King College at the City Colleges of Chicago.

Chicago, Illinois (January 19, 2010) – The graduation celebration on Friday, December 17, 2010 honored not one, but two full-time programs’ graduates of The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King College at City Colleges of Chicago. More than 400 attendees including friends, family, faculty, staff and newly minted alumni celebrated the conclusion of the programs at the Union League Club of Chicago. Seventy-two students in L’Art de la Pâtisserie – The Professional Pastry and Baking Program, and 36 in L’Art du Gâteau – The Professional Cake Decorating and Baking Program completed their six- and four-month terms, respectively. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO SUCCEED AS A PASTRY CHEF?

Chicago, Illinois (September 3, 2010) - The newest addition to The French Pastry School at City Colleges of Chicago, Chef Melissa Chanselle-Hary, brings varied experiences to her position as Kitchen Assistance Coordinator. Chanselle-Hary pursued studies in theatre arts at the Virginia Commonwealth University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude, majoring in Theatre Performance. After working as a professional actress and teacher, with roles that included acting in training simulations for United States government agencies, directing an acting school in London, Chanselle-Hary changed professions and pursued her passion for pastry.

WORLD BAKING CHAMPION MAKES THE MOVE FROM ALSACE, FRANCE TO CHICAGO


Chicago, Illinois (August 11, 2010) – The City of Chicago has acquired a new resident: one of the best bakers in the world. Master Pastry Chef and World Baking Champion, Pierre Zimmermann has arrived in the Windy City, leaving behind his small village, Schnersheim in Alsace, and the bakery which had been operated by the Zimmermann family for four generations.

Chicago, Illinois (July 22, 2010) – The newest Chef Instructor at The French Pastry School at City Colleges of Chicago, Scott Green, brings experience and the perspective of a gifted artist to his role. Green pursued studies in fine art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where his first concentration was oil painting, a talent that earned him a scholarship.

Kings of Pastry, the latest documentary film directed by D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus (The War Room, Don't Look Back) is coming soon to a theatre near you! Released in 2009, Kings of Pastry, starring Chef Jacquy Pfeiffer of The French Pastry School, has screened in several cities across Europe including Munich, Berlin, Bologna, Dumfries, as well as in England, the Netherlands, and Australia

WHITE HOUSE PASTRY CHEF ADDRESSES GRADUATES OF THE FRENCH PASTRY SCHOOL

Chicago, Illinois (June 30, 2010) – Graduates, faculty and staff of The French Pastry School were honored to have guest speakers, White House Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses, and Joe Trummer, a Food Scientist with the Sara Lee Corporation, address attendees on June 18th at the graduation ceremony of L’Art de la Pâtisserie, The Professional Pastry and Baking 24-week program at The French Pastry School. The newest group of alumni celebrated with their chef instructors, friends, and family at The Union League Club of Chicago. Chef Instructor Nicholas Lodge and Alumna Rieko Wada Receive Honors

Chef Lodge has been named one of the Top Ten Cake Artists as well as one of the Top Ten Pastry Chefs of 2010 by Dessert Professional Magazine, making this the first time a chef has received both of these honors in the same year. Chef Rieko Wada, owner of the successful shop Sweet Endeavors in Schaumburg showcased her signature chocolates for this year’s GRAMMY® and Academy Awards®.
