Pastry Chicago Contestants Put Creative Twists on One of America’s Favorite Baked Treats

Twenty-two pastry enthusiasts gathered at Alliance Paper & Foodservice Equipment on November 8, 2014, to submit their favorite recipes for chocolate brownies at Pastry Chicago's 4th Annual Amateur/Student Brownie Competition. Alliance, a Lombard-based business and a Chicagoland staple for the food service industry, was a great host, providing a special coupon and a vendor showcase just for guests and competitors to enjoy during the event. The vendor showcase featured EMI Yoshi, F.O.H, Taylor, and ISI Products who displayed their products and accessories.

Another feature of the event was a chef demonstration presented by The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King College at City Colleges of Chicago. Chef Patrice Caillot, World Pastry Champion and a chef instructor from The French Pastry School, showed spectators how to make Chocolate Brownies with a Chocolate-Hazelnut Crunch and Ganache. Samples were passed around and everyone got a taste of this decadent Crispy Brownie. A panel of judges including Christa Bertolini, Manager of Talent Acquisition at Mariano's Fresh Market; Cheryl Brookhouzen, President/Owner of Stir It Up, Inc.; Phyllis Faulman, Retired Test Kitchen Owner; Samantha Flynn, Customer Service Representative at Alliance Paper & Foodservice Equipment; Bogna Solak, Owner of Oak Mill Bakery; and Joni Stern, President of Stern Ingredients, Inc. were busy scoring the brownie entries during the demonstration.

Prizes for the top five winners were provided by KitchenAid, Plugrá European Style Butter, King Arthur Flour, and Nielsen-Massey Vanillas. Winner of the 4th Annual Brownie Competition, Anabella Sosa Diez, brought home a KitchenAid Stand Mixer, a collection of Nielsen-Massey Vanillas, a gift card from King Arthur Flour, and a Plugrá Butter apron and coupons for her Cashew Caramel Chocolate Brownies. Mari Plotnik won Second Place with her Mint Cheesecake Brownies. Cheri Albright took home Third Place for her Ultimate Fudge Mocha Brownies. Fourth Place went to Angelina Simmons for her Turtle Brownies. Matthew Kelley won Fifth Place for his Chocolate Espresso Brownies.
