Maria Alvarado
Kitchen Coordinator
“Nothing is more gratifying than helping interns perfect their skills, thus providing them with a competitive edge for entering such a vibrant and rewarding industry.”

Maria is the Kitchen Coordinator for The French Pastry School of Kennedy-King College at City Colleges of Chicago.  She attended and graduated from The French Pastry School’s professional pastry and baking program, L’Art de la Pâtisserie, in 2017 and was part of an intern program herself.  Maria had a rewarding college experience as she was the recipient of the 2015 Les Dames D’Escoffier and the Kennedy King Scholarships, named a Presidential Scholar and inducted into Phi Theta Kappa that year.  Before studying French pastries, Maria pursued her associates degree with Washburn Culinary and Hospitality Institute, graduating in the spring of 2016 and prior to that, she attended Northeastern Illinois University where she graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor’s in Environmental Science.

With a desire to coordinate all things related to the growth and development of the intern program, Maria has an integral role as Kitchen Coordinator.  Being a former graduate and intern herself, she has the experience and vision for the department and provides a unique perspective to be able to assist the chef instructors and interns across all programs for years to come.

As Kitchen Coordinator, Maria is responsible for all kitchen ordering, managing the intern schedules, performance, and student compliance with all kitchen policies.  She understands what it takes to excel in the program and what interns need to be successful on campus.  Maria is the go-to person for the chefs across all programs, making her the life-system of the intern program at The French Pastry School.
